Falsely Accused of: Attempted murder and attempted abuse
Time Served: 25 years
Date of Wrongful Conviction: 18/12/1978
Appeal Judgement: 25/5/2005
Date of Release: 17/3/2003 on license
At the age of his conviction Paul was 15 years old and was given a 10 year tariff; he had served just less than 25 years in jail (including time on remand) before being released on license at the age of 39 in March 2003. At his appeal it was established that the confession Paul made while being interviewed by the Police was wholly unreliable and that the police had lied about the circumstances in which the confession was obtained. The police were instrumental in the writing of Paul’s confession, and also lied under oath at his trial. Without this false confession there would have been no evidence whatsoever with which to convict Paul. Paul entered prison as a boy and lost over two decades of his life for a crime which he did not commit on the basis of the lies of malevolent police officers.
